Palatine Hill and Roman Forum

The Palatine Hill is where, according to legend Romulus and Remus were found by a she-wolf who ket them alive, Romulus later returned and founded Rome here.  Certainly this are is one of the oldest inhabited areas with people living there as early as 1000 BC.

Walking up from the Colosseum, through the Arch of Titus you get an amazing view of the Forum, the heart of Ancient Rome.  The area was one of the earliest settled and was developed and redeveloped over a long period before being completely abandoned, during the Middle Ages it was known as Campo Vaccino or the Cattle Field.  There is now an eclectic mix of ruined fragments of buildings which would take most of a day to explore.
