Photographing Fireworks

This is the third year that I've attempted to photograph fireworks and I think I'm improving each time so that's pleasing.  Like a lot of amateur photographers I wanted to get some shots but was expecting it to be pretty tricky, actually if you have the right kit and follow a few simple rules the basic technical elements are pretty easy and once you've mastered that you can start thinking more about the composition.

How to photograph fireworks

Equipment -

  • A camera with Bulb mode (ordinary long exposures are OK but much less flexible)
  • A tripod (I've seen some good handheld firework shots, but I can't imagine you'd get many keepers from an evening)
  • A remote shutter release
  • A small penlight can be useful

Balloons over Barlick

We got up at 5:00am today not much of a change for me but definitely not appreciated by our six year old. We bundled the family into the car and headed for Barnoldswick on the Lancashire / Yorkshire border not far from Skipton. I had set myself a number of photography goals for the year Banded Demoiselles The Red Arrows and Hot Air Balloons the first two were in the bag and we'd seen on the internet that there would be Hot Air Balloons in Barnoldswick. We didn't know what to expect how many what time etc.

Red Arrows at Whitby

We went camping at the weekend over on the east coast of Yorkshire I was hoping to visit the puffins at Bempton Cliffs but the weather was pretty miserable so we decided to go and look at Whitby instead.  We did the usual walk round the Abbey and into the town had Fish and Chips and then went to the harbour.
